Willow Class Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

This term our topic is 'The Seaside.’ We will learn about the geography of a seaside location including the physical and human features of a seaside town.  We will use maps to locate countries of the UK and name the continents and oceans.

In History we will explore how the seaside has changed since Victorian times and find out about why Grace Darling and Mary Anning are important.  We will ask the questions “What it was like for people in the past at the seaside?” and “What happened in the past?” We will use a variety of sources of information including film, photographs, dramatisations and recounts to help answer these questions.

Our writing will be linked to our seaside topic.  We will write stories based on “The Lighthouse Keepers Adventure” and the “Katie Morag” adventures and create leaflets about a seaside location.   We will explore a range of genres including poetry and creative writing based on real or fictional events.   We will use a range of punctuation and strategies to make sentences exciting.  We will practise handwriting ensuring that all letters are formed correctly starting and finishing at the right point.

In maths we will be focussing on fractions of shape and number. We will learn to read the time to 1/4hr.  We will find out about properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Then we will explore measurement of length, capacity and mass.  We will revise place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and money.  We will look at word problems involving all these concepts.

In Science we will be studying plants. We will use our Forest School sessions to help develop our scientific knowledge of plants and observation and recording skills.   We will grow a variety of plants and investigate the factors that affect growth. We will continue to observe seasonal change in the forest.

Our DT is creating a wheeled vehicle.  Pupils will explore how to make an axle and then create their own moving vehicle. In Art we will explore printing techniques and using found materials to make art.  We will look at the work of Andy Goldsworthy and create our own art installations in forest school.  In RE we will explore Judaism and ask the question “How special is the relationship Jews have with God?” We will link our music to the topic by learning sea shanties.
