Science

Intent

Science at Greenacres Primary School is a practical, enquiry based subject.  Through teaching science, we challenge children to ask and answer questions about the World around them and to consider the impact science has on every day lives.

We will encourage discussion and debate about the moral and ethical implications of investigations and scientific discoveries; consideration of the impact on life and the planet and regard to science as a potential career.  We will explore scientific developments and key scientists and the impact they have had on progress and development over time.  Through this we aim to introduce a wide variety of scientists, which demonstrate that a career in STEM subjects is possible for anyone regardless of gender, race and ability.

The aims of the National Curriculum underpin our approaches to science.  These are to:

 develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics

 develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them

 are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

As a scientist, the children will develop these essential characteristics:

  • The ability to think independently and raise questions about working scientifically.
  • Opportunity to explore different types of enquiry and apply these skills to practical working scientifically.
  • Confidence and competence in the full range of practical skills.
  • Excellent scientific knowledge and understanding which is demonstrated in written and verbal explanations, solving challenging problems and reporting scientific findings.
  • A passion for science.

Implementation

Science is taught as a weekly subject.  The curriculum is structured so that there is plenty of opportunity to revisit and extend knowledge and understanding.

Enquiry skills are a key priority and are developed across the curriculum.

Science is planned as a stand alone block in order to ensure we are covering the full curriculum offer.  We have organised our long term plan for science in the following way.
