Rowan Class Year 3/4

Welcome to Rowan class!

Our teaching team

Our topic this term is Fair trade chocolate. In Geography we will be learning about what fair trade means and how land can be used. We will be linking our topic to our history and learning about the Maya. We will learn about when and where the Maya lived, what their daily life was like and how they have impacted our lives. We will look at how they ate chocolate and maybe even try some ourselves!

English

We will start the term looking at explanation texts. Using the model text 'The Teacher Pleaser', we will work out what makes a good explanation text, thinking about the language and structural features. We will practise using the language features and write innovated versions of the text. For our hot writes, we will design our own machines and independently write explanations to explain how they work.

Later in the half term, we will look at different types of poetry. We will start with some performance poetry, thinking about how to use intonation, tempo and volume to give effective performances. We will also look at Haiku and Cinquain poems, identifying their key features before writing our own.

Maths

We will start the term learning about multiplication and division. We will learn different written methods and think about which are the most efficient. After this, we will move onto a unit on measurement. We will learn about equivalent measurements and how we can use these to find perimeters. Year 4 will also learn about how to find the area of shapes.

Don't forget!

Forest School - Wednesday afternoons. Children should bring old, warm, waterproof clothing as we aim to get out whatever the weather. Please only send in clothes which you do not mind getting dirty. A carrier bag for muddy wellies is also useful. Children who do not have appropriate clothing will not be able to join us outside.

PE - Tuesday and Fridays. Children must have their PE kit in school on these days. They are welcome to bring their kit in at the start of the week and leave it in school until Friday.
