PE

Intent

Our children will foster a love of physical activity and sport which will allow them to leave Greenacres with the skills and mindset to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond.  They will develop into confident and resilient children who will strive for their personal best in a wide range of physical activities.  Our children will to be able to work collaboratively, think creatively and challenge themselves physically.   They will obtain the values and skills required to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own success.

Implementation

PE will be delivered either by the sports coach or class teacher.  It is expected that all children will have at least 2 hours of Physical Education a week.  This may be delivered as a block or in two or more sessions across the week.

In addition to this, we actively engage in sports activities out of school provide by a number of stakeholders.  This gives the children opportunities for both inter and intra school competitions.  Through this we encourage the development of sports knowledge and skills, whilst focussing on personal development which comes  through representing the school at fixtures and events in a wide variety of activities.

We aim to offer a variety of sports in school and have planned these into our two year long term plan, as set out below.

These activities may be subject to change when there is additional opportunities offered by external providers.  For example in the Spring Term Year 4/5 were offered a number of weeks coaching in squash at Shrewsbury Sports village.  They went along, with other schools to 3 coaching session before playing in a mini tournament.  We would not have been able to offer squash in school, so this has been another opportunity for children to engage in a sport they may not normally have access to.  Feedback was very positive from the children who were able to go.  We also had positive feedback from the organisers about the resilience and teamwork of our children.  It was shared that our group cheered on their opponents and demonstrated amazing skills of sportsmanship and respect.

After school clubs and opportunities.

Across the year, we offer a range of clubs and activities which offer children the chance to engage in more Physical activity.  These clubs run three times a week and target different age groups.  So far this year we have offered dance, gymnastics, racket ball, fitness and indoor Olympics.

We also signpost children with particular skills, abilities or interests to local clubs or holiday schemes.  This enables children to complete more activities and enables the development of skills and experience.

Impact

In every PE session, children are asked to evaluate and consider their own performance.  This ties in with the progression map and long term plan, linked to the National Curriculum and Early Years Statutory Framework for PE and Physical Development.

In addition to this, we also assess the impact of PE by:

  • Completing the annual review of Sports Grant funding which is published on our website.
  • Teacher assessment for learning using curriculum and Statutory framework objectives.
  • Peer review by watching and giving feedback on performance and skills.
  • Participation in sporting events
  • The Schools Games programme.

Children are judged to have met the age related expectations for their year group in line with our progression documents.  This judgement the forms part of the annual report to parent's which is completed at the end of each Summer Term.
