Base 5

Welcome to Base 5!

What we are learning

English

In English this term, we will be writing and performing poems and writing a narrative based on the short film Feast. Alongside our English Lessons, we will be doing daily spelling practise. The children need to be confident in spelling the statutory spellings for their year group and spellings will be given out on a Monday each week to be learnt for and tested on the Friday. 

 

Maths

The children are focusing on all areas of maths and will be practising arithmetic weekly. They will also be doing daily times tables practise to support their learning. They can go online on Times Tables Rockstars which is a website which helps the children with the accuracy and the speed of their times tables. They each have a username and password and can log on at home to practise too. We will also be using Activ Learn to help with the catch up of the maths they missed during lockdown.

 

Science

In the first half of the Autumn term, the children will be learning about the systems in the human body. In the second half of the term they will be investigating light.

 

History

In history this half term, Base 5 will be learning about the Anglo Saxons. We will be learning facts about life in that time and using sources to help us find out more about their lives.

 

Geography

Next half term, in Geography, Base 5 will be learning about trade. They will be expanding their vocabulary by using the geographical terms and phrases.

 

PHSE

We will be focussing on families and relationships this term. We will also be sharing our feelings about COVID-19 and discussing coping strategies with our feelings.

 

RE

In RE we are learning about celebrations in different religions.

 

PE

The children are developing their fitness and learning how to do yoga.PE takes place on Monday each week. Please ensure your child is wearing their full PE kit on that day.

 

ART

In art, we will develop our drawing skills and learn how to make jewellery.

 

D AND T

In D and T, the children will be learning how to construct a shelter.

 

Computing

In computing this term, the children will be improving their knowledge of E-safety and hardware investigators.

 

Music

In music this term, the children will be listening to a range of different genres and music from different periods of time. They will be answering questions about what they have listened to and learning about different composers.

Important days

Tuesday and Thursday are our PE days this term. Children should bring their kit in on a Monday and take it home on Friday to be washed then return it the following Monday. 

 

Spelling homework is usually set on a Monday and is due in on the Friday. The children need to practise their reading every day at home as well as continued practise of their times tables.
