What we are learning this term
The first topic will investigate keeping healthy. We will look closely at the function of the heart, investigate pulse rates, and learn about the digestive system as well as discussing the human life cycle. It will also link to our DT work which requires children to produce healthy snacks based on recipes from around the world.
Our second topic will cover sounds. The unit will allow children to identify a range of sound sources that make different sounds as well as identifying how these sounds are made. Where possible associating some of them with something vibrating. They will find patterns between the volume of the sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it and between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it. At the end of the unit, the children will recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear.
Our work this term will be based around the novel ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ by Ross McKenzie as well as around our author workshop which will be led by the author of our class novel ‘Catscape’ - Mike Nicholson.
This term in maths we will be working with the four operations in a variety of contexts. We will be learning about Algebra, Fractions, Ration and Proportion, Statistics and Measurement (area and perimeter).
Computing will be based on control using the computer program called Scratch. As always we will be using ICT to support our learning and reminding the children about how to stay safe online. There will also be opportunities for researching using the internet and word processing.
P.E. will be covering Dance (Tuesdays) and Net/Wall activities (Thursday). There will be two intra-house competitions this term to look forward to.
PSHE will study the topic of ‘Getting on and falling out’.
DT will involve food from China linking to Chinese New Year.
RE unit of work covers ‘Many Faiths’.
Geography will be the study of the UK: Investigating who we are.
Music involves performing in rounds.
Homework - the children need to read at home every night. They also need to practise their spelling every day at home, either from the Year 5 and 6 spelling list or from the spellings they have in their orange diaries. Maths homework requires the children to be working through units on ActiveLearn and practising their multiplication and division facts.
