What we are learning this term
This term we are focusing on fiction inspired by the illustrated novels ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Neil Gaiman and ‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness. We are also visiting the Hay Literacy Festival where we will attend author workshops by Abi Elphinstone and Steve Mould. We will be writing poetry using The Lost Words as a stimulus.
We have two more visits to The Lantern Library this term which will allow the children the opportunity to return their previous loaned books as well as to borrow a different book.
This term in maths we will be working with the four operations in a variety of contexts. We will also be learning about algebra, properties of shapes, measure(mass), fractions, ratio and proportions, statistics as well as perimeter and area.
This term we will be studying 2 units of work in Science.
The first topic will investigate Changing Material which will involve the children being able to research materials and their uses. They will investigate whether all materials conduct heat, whether all metals attract magnets, the effect of heat on metal as well as brightness of bulbs to the type of metal. We will be looking at natural materials and their uses on our trip to Wrekin Forest.
Our second topic will cover plants. The children will identify parts of the flower head so that they understand pollination and seed collection. They will investigate the effect of light, water, air on growing plants. They will grow new plants from different parts of a parent plant which will allow them to find out about the function of leaves and flowers.
History is a study of Britain before the Romans and involves a trip to Groundworks in Wrexham for a Celtic experience day.
PSHE will study the topic of ‘Changes’. (Parents will be sent letters inviting them into class to view videos and resources that are used to deliver these sessions before the lessons take place.)
Computing will involve using reading apps, word processing, e –safety and programming.
P.E. will on a Tuesday and a Thursday and will be covering Striking and Fielding and Athletics. (Please ensure the children have trainers as well as their shorts and t-shirts.)
RE involves studying religious beliefs and how religions mark special occasions (an emphasis on Christianity and Sikhism).
Music involves listening and appraising to Mowtown leading to composing a rhythmic composition leading to performing together.
Homework - the children need to read at home every night. They also need to practise their spelling every day at home, either from the Year 5 and 6 spelling list or from the spellings they have in their orange diaries. Maths homework requires the children to be working through units on ActiveLearn and practising their multiplication facts.
